This blog will answer common questions about how Direct Primary Care is a lot like Concierge Medicine, but even better and more affordable.
Direct Primary Care (DPC) and Concierge Medicine (CM) are two distinct healthcare models that offer similar services but differ in their payment model. Because of the increasing cuts in physician payments over time, Concierge Medicine began as a concept of billing for the luxury service of added personal attention. This personal service can often cost $3000 -$6000 per year under CM and does not include the medical consultations you may have during the year and the associated co-payments and deductibles you would have to pay.
DPC evolved to make that same personal service affordable and accessible to many more people for only one low monthly membership fee. Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care does not bill your insurance plan for any services (see FAQ5 below); therefore, our services have no assigned co-pays or deductibles.
Yes, DPC is more affordable. DPC practices charge a lower monthly fee than CM's annual retainer, often 3 to 6 times lower. This cost-effectiveness can make high-quality primary care accessible to more individuals. Avoiding co-payments and deductibles must also be factored into the cost-benefit comparison. Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care also has connections for low-cost lab, imaging, and pharmacy services. We are working on obtaining low-cost specialty consultations.
DPC and CM provide primary care services. With DPC and CM memberships, you will still need hospital, ER, urgent care, and specialty services coverage. There are various options to consider.
To complement your DPC membership, you could purchase standard insurance coverage or choose catastrophic-only plans or healthshare plans to reduce premium costs. At Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care, if you have a traditional insurance plan, you could use this insurance to cover pharmacy, laboratory, and imaging services or pay those costs out of pocket at a discount through arrangements we have made.
CM requires patients to maintain separate standard insurance coverage for their primary care services, potentially increasing their overall costs in premiums, co-payments, and deductibles. The doctor must be in-network with your plan. They may not have discount arrangements for pharmacy, laboratory, and imaging services.
Concierge Medicine will typically offer direct access to the provider and may offer more convenient appointments, but it can vary widely depending on the practice. DPC is renowned for its accessibility. Patients in DPC practices can enjoy unhurried, longer appointments, often same-day or next-day scheduling, and direct access to their primary care physician. At Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care, we pride ourselves on non-rushed extended length visits and same or next-day in-office or tele-health service for our DPC members. We provide direct access to the physician 24/7, 7 days a week, via phone and text. We also have topnotch front desk service with a back-line number for our members to reach the front desk without going through voicemail and direct access to the front desk by texting during regular business
hours.
Both models offer personalized care, such as direct access to your physician and improved accessibility, as described above in FAQ4. They also provide routine primary care services, manage complex diseases and acute care situations.
At Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care membership, you also get travel counseling both before and during travel, sports physical clearance, and DOT and other work physicals, typically not covered by insurance plans. If need be, we would also help you make appointments or provide additional services, such as a family consultation. We also offer some procedures, such as trigger points for chronic pain, wax removal, and partial toenail removal for ingrown toenails, for example.
Some DPC providers offer home visits at an additional cost, and for some CM practices, home visits are already included.
Absolutely. Concierge Medicine may focus on prevention but may prioritize it to a different extent than DPC. In CM, the emphasis is on providing a higher level of accessibility to the doctor while the remainder of the services run according to the traditional insurance-based model.
DPC strongly emphasizes preventive care, aiming to keep patients healthy and reduce the need for costly specialty care. DPC practices go the extra mile by frequently extending their services to encompass wellness and lifestyle guidance. At Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care, your doctor becomes a trusted partner in your pursuit of health. She will take the time to understand your unique medical history, lifestyle, and goals. This personalized approach allows her to offer tailored advice on nutrition, physical activity, and other aspects of a well-balanced lifestyle. She will work with you to develop strategies to prevent common health issues, and is readily accessible for questions, concerns, or health maintenance visits.
In both DPC and Concierge Medicine, you can establish deeper doctor-patient relationships due to longer appointment times and more personalized care. However, DPC's cost-effectiveness often means it's accessible to a broader demographic, making it an attractive option for those looking for a strong patient-doctor connection without breaking the bank.
In CM, medication costs are typically determined only by your insurance carrier.
In DPC, where state law allows, memberships include prescription medications at cost or a significant discount, reducing the financial burden on patients. In Massachusetts, in-office dispensing is not allowed except for certain injectable medications. At Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care, we include a few injectables (e.g., antibiotics, headache medicines, and lidocaine, to name a few) in our membership service. We are working towards building a relationship with pharmacies to include low-cost oral medications in the monthly membership fee.
CM doctors still bill insurance plans for their services, so the difficulties associated with that remain, including making sure you are eligible before being seen, getting things covered, finding out that they are not covered, and getting unexpected bills months after service. What things might cost you may not be as straightforward, leading to difficulty managing cost control.
DPC is known for its transparent pricing and simplified billing, which can help patients better understand their healthcare costs and prevent surprise billing. You pay a single monthly (or annual) bill. Anything not covered by the monthly fee, for example, lab work, is disclosed upfront, with the price made available to you in advance. You can then purchase it directly or obtain it elsewhere under your insurance plan. Alpha-Omega Direct Primary Care does not up-charge these items, turning them around at cost to the patients and providing additional
opportunities for savings.
Primary care physicians can help coordinate specialist care and hospital referrals in DPC and CM models. Your insurance (if you have one) would typically cover the cost of these additional services, regardless of whether you choose DPC or Concierge Medicine.
Direct Primary Care offers an affordable, patient-centered approach to primary care, focusing on accessibility, transparency, preventive and comprehensive services, and providing personal attention. While Concierge Medicine has its merits, the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of DPC make it a compelling choice for individuals seeking high-quality primary care without the high price tag.
